What Are Concrete Pools?

concrete pools

Concrete pools are in-ground swimming pool structures built with a concrete mix that’s either sprayed on the shell or gunite (a combination of sand, concrete and water that’s sprayed into place on the pool shell). They’re the most expensive type of pool, and can be made in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Because they’re so durable, if properly maintained, concrete pools can last for decades. They’re also versatile in design, allowing for vanishing edges, beach entries and tanning ledges to be created. They can be shaped into any shape imaginable, and can be adorned with a wide range of pool water features, decks and coping options, such as waterfalls, scuppers, water walls, misters, statues and more.

Pool builders dig a hole in your yard and then frame it out using rebar (a cage of steel bars). Once the pool has been framed, concrete is sprayed onto the inside surface of the pool. The sprayed concrete is then left to cure, and once it’s finished, a plaster finish is applied. Generally, plaster-lined pools require acid washing every five years and may need touchups or resurfacing of the paint or plaster after ten years.

While they’re extremely durable, concrete pools require more maintenance than other types of inground pool. This is because they are more prone to algae growth, and their porous surfaces make it easy for algae to find a home in the warm, moist concrete environment. They also need to be brushed more regularly, and their water chemistry must be carefully balanced. This can be costly, as it requires more time and attention to manage than other types of pools.

One of the biggest issues with a concrete pool is that if it’s not managed correctly, the interior surface can stain and spoil very quickly. This is why a strict maintenance plan must be in place from the very beginning of ownership, and it must continue to be followed. It’s important to get your pool professional on board early on, and to ensure that you have the best possible plan in place for a long-term, healthy, happy swim.

A concrete pool will be the most costly to build, and will need a much larger budget than a fiberglass or vinyl liner. This is due to the amount of labor and materials required to build these types of pools, and the large size of a concrete pool. The price of a concrete pool can also vary significantly depending on the pool shape and finish, adding decking or coping, the number and type of water features, and other factors.

It’s essential to understand the ins and outs of these types of pools before making a decision about which one is right for you. No matter which type of pool you choose, it’s important to get a professional on board as soon as possible, and to put a good maintenance plan in place from the very beginning. This will help you avoid any major problems down the road, and to keep your pool looking its best for years to come.
