How Inground Swimming Pools Are Constructed

A luxury inground pool can provide a beautiful oasis in your backyard where you and your family will enjoy the pleasure of swimming, relaxing or entertaining. In addition, a new inground pool adds resale value to your home and can be a great investment.

Unlike above-ground pools, inground swimming pools are custom-built to fit into your yard and can be made in virtually any size or shape you desire. They can also be constructed out of a variety of materials, including concrete and fiberglass. Concrete pools are the most popular and versatile as they can be made in a wide range of design styles, colors and finishes to complement any landscaping and architecture. They can be customized by adding features like tanning ledges, built-in seating and waterfalls to enhance both form and function.

The pool construction process begins with excavation. This is done with heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators or bobcats and takes place in the area of your backyard where you want your pool to be located. Before digging, it is important to contact a local “Call Before You Dig” service to have any existing power, water or gas lines marked. This can help prevent costly mistakes and delays in the project.

Once the hole has been dug, plumbing lines are installed to connect the pool to the filtration and heating systems. Once the plumbing is in place a concrete collar is poured around each of the pool walls to help support the weight when the pool is filled with water.

Week 3 of the pool construction is when the steel is fabricated and formed to make the pool shape. This is a fun time to watch your pool take shape and to see the team at work.

A form is then erected around the shape and gunite, sometimes called shotcrete is power-sprayed into the form. This is actually’making’ the swimming pool. Once the gunite is’made’ and has cured for several days, tile can be installed and it’s this stage that really gives the pool its character and charm.

After the tile has been set and mastic applied, it is then grouted with a special mortar mix. This is also the stage when a number of other options can be added to your pool such as rock coping, Diamond Bright, gunite, marble dust and plaster.

Finally, the ladders, rails, diving board and other accessories are installed. The pool can then be backfilled with dirt and after a few weeks of settling the landscaping, decking or other features can be completed.

A swimming pool is a major investment and if you choose to install an inground pool, it’s important to carefully weigh your options and plan for the long term. It’s also a good idea to obtain a building permit and check with your local zoning laws to ensure compliance with safety and design regulations. With proper planning, your inground pool will be an asset and a pleasure for many years to come.
